The periosteum seems to play an important biological role and
is able to stimulate growth as well as differentiation of
seeded chondrocytes .
It may be speculated that the repair tissue seen in both humans and in animal models is enhanced or dependent on a paracrine stimulation of the chondrocytes provided in the periosteum .
