TO LASER OR NOT TO LASER,
THAT IS THE QUESTION

In group of 100 patients having undergone arthroscopic meniscal surgery the pros and cons of the laser technique is compared to the conventional mechanical approach. In 50 % of the patients conventional arthroscopy was performed, while in the other cases the Holmium Yag laser was employed.

The answer to the title´s question is both yes and no, depending on the patients anamnesis on the one hand and the intraoperative findings on the other. The advantages and disadvantages of each method will be discussed in detail and the attention is drawn to errors in laser surgery which may discredit this technique or have caused problems in the past.
